Certificate Course in Introduction to Geospatial Tools for Conservation

Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bangalore is pleased to announce that it is offering a comprehensive certificate course in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) for environmental conservation. This intensive course will provide participants with an opportunity to learn the basic principles of remote sensing, geographical information systems and GPS. The course will also provide rigorous, individualized hands-on training in GIS/RS techniques using state-of-the art software.

The course will consist of theory and lab classes, and a short field session for learning GPS tools and techniques. Topics to be discussed will include: Basics of GIS/RS data structure and analysis, Cartographic principles, Basic principles of remote sensing, Digital Image Processing, Spatial data sources, GPS theory, field data collection and processing. The hands-on training will be conducted in the QGIS and IDRISI software.

Eligibility: The course is intended for early to mid-career professionals and students with a keen interest in biodiversity conservation, natural resource management and GIS/RS applications in these fields. Participants are expected to have good knowledge in basic computer applications such as MS-Office and Internet techniques. The number of seats will be limited to 12.

Dates: The 12-day course is scheduled from 14th Feb 2011 to 26th Feb 2011.

Fees: A fee of Rs 10,000/- will be charged for the entire course. The selected candidates will have to deposit the course fee in advance by Feb 8th. The course fees include cost of the course, course material and lunch for the 12 days of the course.

Two fellowships are available for deserving candidates with demonstrated need. Those who desire to avail this facility have to submit a separate request along with the application form, justifying their need.

For outstation candidates, ATREE can make arrangements for accommodation on twin sharing basis. Accommodation and travel expenses will have to be borne by the participants.

Computer requirements: Participants will be required to bring their own laptop computer with Windows OS for the lab sessions. ATREE can assist to hire computers locally, if required.
